well thankfully i work with a LOT of layers, so it i throw basic shading on surfaces then the Nvidia plug in can generate pretty decent normal maps with a little bit of work they are usable. I made a few mistakes with the direction of the UV's (currently one of the biggest limitation of the photoshop plug in) so it has to be tweeked or the direction of some of the surface normals are going in the wrong direction [carved in as apposed to extruded out]
almost the entire texture was painted although that said it probably could have been done a lot easier and faster if I had just painted them in a more linear fashion [more like a traditional canvas rather than digital onion skin layers] because even though i made it easier to tweek it takes much longer to throw together.

When working on my paladin model I had to paint some of the finer details. Bolts and other things like that. I had the same problem with normal direction when painting those. At first I didn't realize it, but once the model was lit it was very obvious.
This is some very impresive work. I really thought you modeled the normals in something like ZBrush. Looking forward to more.
well you can do that too but it just depends on what you feel more comfortable with or what takes less time. for me it was the set up, to work with the Nvidia plugin in photo shop you have to layout your UVs so they are all facing the same direction (I.E. world up) the arms are a little tricky since they face out but its a quick fix by either swapping the red and green channels in those areas or just inverting the channels if any problems in direction show up.
also Zbrush is fine and dandy but until they fix the problem with generating normal maps you have to generate them in Maya or 3ds Max and it takes considerably longer.
