This is kursed, the protagonist of a Source mod I’ve recently become interested in, I decided to throw in my chips with them for a while and maybe get into character modeling a bit, for my art test they gave me the main character (probably already have a version so they might not even use mine) so I decided to play with the model sheet since it looked a little flat for a main character.

The character is based off one of the offshoot endings of Starfox Command where Krystal changes her name to Kursed and becomes a bounty hunter. I dig the character and the plot concept so I have no problem with trying to improve it. That said my artistic license is compounded by the fact that I haven’t played Command yet so I didn’t know they showed you what Nintendo thought Kursed should look like at the end of that varation of the plot.

I yield the point to Nintendo on the basis that their version could be rite after the ending of Command, and this version is “a few years later” if you catch my drift (those of you who have read the spoilers or played the game should get that)

Onto the technical description:

This model is pretty much complete, I just need to do some optimizations on the model and lower the poly count a little. At the moment its 27k Triangles [2k Quad polies] which should be find but I would still like to lower it just a bit so it dosent render chunky on some older computers.

It’s UV’d and ready for texturing but I wanted to bounce this WIP off the devs to ask them if they wanted me to change directions. At the point it is now it would be easier for me to make changes rather then after I start optimizing where I would probably have to revert to an old save file which wasn’t UV’d

After I get the OK I should be done with the textures pretty quickly if I can sit in front of them for a few hours without stopping.

After I get past the modeling/texturing phase of the pipeline I’m going to rig and animate her. Should be fun!

The part I’m not entirely looking forward to is reverse engineering the QC files of example characters to export this as a working character into source…

Cool! But are you sure it's 27k triangles? Because you said it's 2k Quads (which is roughly around 4k triangles). Plus it looks way less than 27k triangles (unless you get that number after you subdivide it). I can't wait to see her textured. Keep it up!

Actually, based on her hair length in the ending screenshot, I'd say that it's -several- years later. Of course, the artist when creating it likely did not place any real consideration on it.

Overall it's a good design, looks like. Well executed. My one complaint is the double ponytail. It's not pigtails, atleast, but it's still not something that looks incredibly pleasing. But hey, I'm picky about Krystal, so no worries. XD

well the back of the head is going to be a large left sweeping braid on the entire back of the head, the right clump is remainder that was pretty much thrown in for the sake of balance on the model.

though i know what your talking about, i took a few hours to sketch out some hair "styles" that would suit the character and I'm not entierly sure about this one but its the most functional with the level of geometry...

although if you can think of something else Its not to late to change it and I'd be open to the suggestion ^^

I do like the thought of Krystal with longer hair, perhaps a softer look overall to it. Aside from that, I don't really have anything specific for an idea.

well i was considering the motivation and psychological state of the character in the redesign.

as i read her motivation, she no longer cares so her hair is unkempt and utilitarian there for she doesn't care about the style nor the length but instead just tries to keep it out of her way. the hair is a little frayed and flat and uncared for short of the purple-pink color.

I think that by description (and as the name implies) the softness of Krystal is gone and taking on a new career field depicting her with any level of compassion would be a weakness she could not afford as a bounty hunter.

to reinforce the explanation if i where to have any say in the story when she meet up with fox she would probably have to save his ass and then immediately pop him in the face for getting in her way.

I suppose I need a bit of a recap on the start of SFC... Was it because Fox felt over protective and wanted her to get out of the line of work she was sharing with him? Thus sending her off to try and prove herself as capable of protecting herself, and in that ending not being noticed, so saying screw it and just going off on her own to fight, and not caring much for the well being of others, only the income and thrill...?

I'unno. She doesn't quite seem rough enough, in that case. Think "Two Hands" Levy from Black Lagoon. Now -she- was bad ass, heh. :D
